Why Attendance Matters in the Early Years
Attending regularly and arriving on time helps children settle quickly and get the most from their time with us — building relationships with their key person, friendships, confidence and a sense of belonging, and keeping the continuity that helps learning stick.
When Your Child Is Absent
Illness and other legitimate circumstances are part of family life. Please let us know as early as you can so we know your child is safe and well, and tell us in advance about any planned absence.
- Contact the nursery as early as possible on the first day of absence
- Let us know the reason, so we can support your child on their return
- Tell us in advance about holidays or other planned absence
- Follow current guidance on exclusion periods for infectious illnesses
Attendance and Children's Welfare
Statutory school attendance rules do not apply to nursery-aged children, but knowing where a child is remains part of our EYFS safeguarding and welfare duty. Where a pattern of absence, or an unexplained absence, raises a welfare concern, we will follow this up sensitively with the family, in line with our safeguarding responsibilities.

If anything is making it difficult for your child to attend regularly — settling worries, health, transport or family circumstances — please talk to us. We would much rather help than see a child miss out.
